The Requirements
To be a strong fit for the Packaging / Product Engineer opportunity, you will have:- A bachelor’s degree in Packaging, Manufacturing, Mechanical, or Plastics Engineering, or a related field
- 1-2+ years of packaging, product design and development experience in a manufacturing environment; plastics manufacturing is highly preferred, and we'll consider co-op or internship experience included
- Basic understanding and ability in 2D and 3D CAD software design tools
- Knowledge of drafting and specification standards to create production-ready documentation is a strong plus
- Strong computer skills including proficiency in MS Office Suite and experience with manufacturing and/or ERP software, SAP preferred
- Lean knowledge and experience (5S, Kaizen, Six Sigma) is preferred
- Demonstrated ability in process improvement, metric development, and problem-solving
- Clear and concise business and technical writing ability
- A valid driver's license and insurable driving record
- Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with customers, managers and all levels of employees
- Skill providing clear direction and explaining technically complicated information in layman’s terms
- Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
- Commitment to keep information confidential (confidentiality agreement required)
- Excellent organization and prioritization skills; attention to detail while also maintaining a big picture view

Note: While engineering team members work in a comfortable suite of offices in Metamora, when you visit the plants, you may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. On occasion, you could be exposed to a variety of extreme conditions when visiting construction sites. The noise level can be loud.

The Role
Reporting to the Engineering Product Manager, as Packaging / Product Engineer you will be responsible for developing new products, continually improving current products, and developing new and innovative product and manufacturing methods. You will work cross-functionally with all of our Light Building Products brands and an array of products and manufacturing processes, ensuring from cradle to grave we're manufacturing the right products, leveraging the best processes, taking a lean approach and ultimately delivering innovative products that our customers want and need.In performing your role, you will:
- Routinely visit plants to provide support, evaluate plant operations, and provide requested assistance. You’ll begin by supporting 8 plants, primarily in the Eastern U.S., but you could expand into additional plants and wider products (for example, our roofing and stone divisions) over time.
- Evaluate equipment and operations for potential safety and health hazards. Work with plants to eliminate hazards.
- Write technical and business documents, reports, presentations, and correspondence
- Supporting sales, marketing, and the manufacturing team in new product development and design
- Designing and modifying part designs using computer technology
- Designing parts meeting customer specifications
- Developing specifications and obtain quotations for tooling and other equipment as needed for projects

- Interacting with customers as needed for quality issue resolution
- Providing engineering support including:
- Measurement and analysis of production process parameters (energy use, scrap rate, operation efficiency, etc.)
- Participate with Kaizen teams for continuous improvement
- Designing and selecting equipment systems, packaging systems/materials, and materials for new products and continuous improvement
- Following product from development through post-launch validation; testing to ASTM standards
- Maintaining records for projects, programs, designs, systems and materials
- Contributing to the team effort by accomplishing related results as needed
- Other responsibilities as needed and assigned
