JOB TITLE: Executive Director, Immigrant and Targeted Populations - Office of Opportunity and Achievement Gaps (OAG)

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Given the significance of this mission, the district is committed to developing a diverse cadre of educators and administrators, ensuring proper emphasis on culturally responsive service delivery, and rigorously examining and monitoring policies, programs, and practices to ensure that these goals are implemented.

Boston Public Schools seeks an Executive Director, Immigrant and Targeted Populations for the Office of Opportunity and Achievement Gaps (OAG). The Executive Director will collaborate closely with the Assistant Superintendent of OAG to address structural inequities; scale culturally and linguistically sustaining practices district-wide; ensure uniformly high academic expectations; and promote and scale access for all students to high-level educational opportunities. A major focus of the executive director will be to assist in bringing a needed lens and cultivate relationships with families, students, community leaders, and experts of our major immigrant/ethnic populations to help leverage their strengths and aspirations, as well as identify specific needs to address disparities in opportunity and performance. Beyond organizing these streams of work, the executive director will represent the Assistant Superintendent of OAG on many senior-level teams and manage a broad portfolio of work both within the office and in collaboration with other offices guided by the Opportunity and Achievement Gaps Policy.

REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent, Opportunity & Achievement Gaps

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Cultivate, coordinate and collaborate to create targeted strategies for major immigrant/ethnic student groups in Boston consulting with communities, their leaders, other experts and internal stakeholders and bringing that lens to the major initiatives within BPS
  • Collaborate with out of school time (OST) providers and other school support providers in Boston to broaden and measure impact on targeted student groups beyond the traditional school day
  • Assess and prepare reports for the Assistant Superintendent on the District's progress in closing the gaps for target populations and make systemic recommendations for action to improve the district's performance in eliminating opportunity gaps
  • Coordinate with the Office of English Language Learners, especially around immigrant communities who are ELL
  • Serve as a conduit for the Assistant Superintendent on all senior-level central teams to ensure equity/opportunity gap work is embedded in all aspects of the district's policies and practices especially as it relates to targeted immigrant/ethnic populations
  • Provide current research on strategies and successful programs in BPS schools and other districts that can be used to eliminate opportunity/achievement gaps with a specific focus on our major immigrant/ethnic populations
  • Document and disseminate information on promising practices both in research and in schools successful in eliminating gaps for students in target subgroups
  • Collaborate and support the work of the Opportunity and Achievement Gaps office, especially in helping to take key innovations to scale.
Necessary Skills/abilities :
  • Ability to serve as a representative for the Assistant Superintendent on all senior-level central teams to ensure equity/opportunity gap work is embedded in all aspects of the district's policies and practices
  • Assist the Assistant Superintendent of OAG and other BPS staff in diagnosing continuing opportunity gap issues, especially those pertaining to specific immigrant/ethnic groups, and developing appropriate district and school-based practices
  • Ability to create and facilitate cross-sector groups focused on student centered goals
  • Sponsor district-wide and school-based trainings related specifically to closing opportunity gaps as it pertains to specific student populations and maintain these resources
  • Collaborate with other district departments to ensure that schools and school leaders have the knowledge and tools to help staff gain insight and skills to create and enact targeted strategies for historically marginalized populations
QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED :
  • Master's Degree, or equivalent
  • Demonstrated commitment to eliminating opportunity gaps
  • School-based experience (teaching, leading, etc.)
  • Knowledgeable about opportunity gaps and strategies to close them
  • Demonstrated success implementing district-wide, systemic initiatives
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work with and knowledgeable of the many diverse communities and cultures that represent the Boston Public Schools
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Bi/Multilingual
  • Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment
QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED:
  • Expertise in cultural competence, differentiated instruction or other specific strategies to close opportunity gaps
  • Research experience
  • Grant writing experience
TERMS: Managerial E. This position is subject to the City of Boston residency requirement.
