The Requirements

To meet the basic qualifications for the Environmental Management System Specialist role, you must have legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship. Additionally, to be a strong fit for this opportunity you will have:
  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g. Environmental Science, Chemistry or similar scientific field); a graduate degree is preferred  Quick question for you - click here
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience supporting corporate environmental programs
  • Working knowledge of the ISO 14001 Standard and EMS principles, including auditing  Quick question for you - click here
  • Prior experience reading and reviewing regulatory requirements
  • Solid computer skills including basic to intermediate MS Office Suite ability (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); experience using database software
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills; the ability build strong relationships across multiple sites and clearly convey complex information via email, telephone and in person.
  • Ability to run effective meetings and accomplish tasks involving cross-functional teams; a collaborative team-oriented approach combined with the ability to work independently
  • Strong presentation skills with the ability to present to one-on-one up to a mid-sized group (15-25 people)
  • Ability to thrive in an environment requiring you to manage/balance a wide array of responsibilities; multitasking skills 
  • Comfort working with different cultures in a diverse environment; professional polish and the ability to interact effectively with colleagues in Japan, Canada, Mexico, etc. 
  • Formal project management training and/or experience is a plus
In addition, you must be able to travel up to 15%. You will travel to various Canon facilities, particularly to Georgia, Texas and California, but also in other states. You also will travel to Toronto, Canada and  Mexico City, Mexico, but should be open to other international locations as well.

 

The Role

Reporting to the Manager of Environmental Management & Product/Chemical Safety, you will join a small team working out of our state-of-the-art Melville facility. You will be responsible for multiple tasks, including maintaining and improving the EMS, providing system training, managing ISO 14001 certification across multiple sites, conducting audits, managing documentation, such as safety data sheets, and more. You will stay abreast of legislative changes, taking care to read and interpret information to understand how it will impact Canon, then communicating that information to stakeholders across the organization.

More specifically, you will:
  • Support the day-to-day maintenance and improvement of the Canon EMS, including creation and review of EMS-related documentation, achievement of corporate objectives, and tracking of company environmental performance
  • Conduct audits of the company’s EMS to ensure compliance and proper maintenance of EMS requirements; monitor progress against the environmental policy, corporate objectives, and legal requirements  Quick question for you - click here
  • Develop and deliver training to enhance environmental awareness and competency throughout the organization
  • Provide guidance and assistance on environmental matters for personnel throughout Canon Americas’ operations
  • Monitor and evaluate compliance with environmental regulations that affect Canon products and operations throughout North and South America
  • Maintain and improve environmental and chemical safety-related compliance programs managed by the department, such as submission of required registrations/reports and provision of Safety Data Sheets (SDSs)

LEED in Canon U.S.A.
Established by the U.S. Green Building Council, the LEED green building program recognizes buildings that save energy, use fewer resources, reduce pollution, and contribute to healthier environments for their occupants and the community. Canon U.S.A., Inc. has earned LEED certifications for three of its facilities that underwent construction, expansion, and renovation since 2014. When we applied for LEED certificates, we focused on not only energy efficiency of the building but also other environmental contributions based on local requirements.

In February 2014, the Canon Americas Headquarters building in Melville, New York earned LEED Gold. It allows employees to charge their electric vehicles free of charge, and the building “footprint” was designed to maximize natural, open space on the property. In September 2014, the company's Distribution Center in Atlanta, Georgia earned LEED Certified. Solar panels were installed on the roof and exterior electrical outlet "plug-ins" were installed to reduce CO2 emissions from trucks idling while waiting at the dock. In May 2015, the Canon Experience Center, in Costa Mesa, California earned LEED Gold. To create the renovated facility, more than 95% of the existing building was reused, which reduced the environmental impact associated with new building materials and construction waste. Moreover, 75% of construction waste was recycled.
