Primary Responsibilities 

  • Develop complete estimates for both small jobs as well as lead large portions of an estimate for larger projects. 
  • Supervise estimators in the preparation of and check estimates to determine completeness of data used, procedures, and aid in resolving differences in bid items. 
  • Review owner plans and specifications to develop a comprehensive understanding of the project; develop plan for the actual construction to serve as basis for the estimate.
  • Reviews all bid and contract documents. 
  • Conduct site investigation prior to forming a plan of operations to identify any problems or conditions of an unusual nature that may be present. 
  • Utilize engineering techniques and procedures to conduct investigation and adhere to standard company policy and procedures. 
  • Perform design work as required by the project that is beyond the estimator scope of experience; handle any major technical problems encountered during bid preparation.
  • Stay abreast of trends and developments, such as new equipment, methods and procedures that are developing in the industry. 
  • Prepare special engineering studies or reports required by certain bid items or conditions. 
  • Consult with owners on various problems discovered during bid preparation, design, rates, schedules, etc. 
  • Develop scopes for subcontractors and suppliers to cover. Outreach with subcontractors and suppliers. 
    Be knowledgeable of earthwork, foundations, deep excavations, shoring and structural concrete, rock removal, material management, storm and sanitary sewer systems, underground utilities, hardscapes, paving, miscellaneous concrete and all other aspects of commercial site work.
  • Develop the bid strategy with an emphasis on defining and exploiting Digg Commercial’s strategic advantages.
  • Attend pre-bid meetings if necessary.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of crew composition, production rates and material requirements including waste and yield factors.
  • Review proposals from subcontractors and suppliers in HeavyBid.
  • Identify risk issues and their order of magnitude.
  • Interaction with clients, suppliers and subcontractors before, during and after bid development and submission to develop lasting relationships.
  • Communicate regularly with other Digg Commercial employees to develop winning bids and promote supplier, subcontractor and client relationships.
  • Analyze costs, profitability, scope and nature of work to be performed.
  • Post bid award duties including but not limited to: Subcontractor and supplier pricing evaluations, completing relevant owner required documentation, project budget setup, assist in conforming estimates for transition to project management and accounting systems.
  • Follow up with clients post bid.
  • Review pre-job and initial project schedules

Qualifications 

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in mechanical, civil or construction-related technology, OR extensive and related work experience leading to a thorough understanding of the knowledge, skills and abilities described above.
  • At least 10 years of estimating experience with hard dollar bids, including heavy civil, site work and underground projects.
  • Extensive knowledge and demonstrated experience with heavy civil construction specifically pipeline, highway and site development work.
  • Exceptionally strong attention to detail, communication, interpersonal and leadership skills 
  • Minimum of five years in Commercial Civil Site work – Dirt work, Concrete work and Utilities.
  • Minimum five years AutoCAD  
  • Proficiency in all computer software programs used in estimating with particular emphasis on HCSS estimating and project management software, HeavyBid and HeavyJob.
  • Must approach the work with a sense of urgency to be able to meet deadlines and allot the time to get the job done.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. 
  • Exceptional organizational skills along with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and to communicate in a professional manner.
  • Possess strong mathematical and computer skills.  Proficiency with Excel.
