GREAT SCHOOLS START WITH GREAT TEACHERS

Join the East St. Louis Urban Education Teacher Residency

Earn your Master's Degree in this one year, full-time teacher preparation program. Begins soon.

It gives us great pleasure to introduce plans for our East St. Louis Urban Education Teacher Residency Program for the 2018-2019 school year!  We are excited to be at the helm of this transformative work in our District and look forward to your support throughout the process.

The Plan for Teacher Residents

School District 189 seeks talented, committed individuals who passionately believe that all students deserve a quality education.  Those individuals must already have a bachelor’s degree before applying to become a candidate in the Urban Ed TRP.  After a successful application process, invitation to Selection Saturday interviews with TSL staff and District administration, and program acceptance, 15 teacher residents will commit to working toward securing Illinois teacher licensure as they pursue a Master’s degree from National Louis University in Elementary Education for grades 1-5 in 2018-2019.

Residents will be required to take and pass the Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP) prior to beginning coursework in July of 2018 or provide an ACT score of 22 or above.

Training Year Expectations

Teacher residents will obtain practical classroom experience with regular guidance from one of eight Master Teachers at the District’s chosen training facility for the TRP located at James Avant Elementary School.  Residents will be paired and meet regularly with a Master Teacher at Avant, receive ongoing professional development from the program’s Mentor Resident Leader and additional supports.  They will work with other residents in a cohort, creating a built-in support system.  All residents will earn $30,000 during the residency year and become eligible for an Illinois Educator License.

After Training Year

Residents who complete all Masters level coursework and successfully fulfill requirements of the ESL Urban Education Teacher Residency Program will become eligible for hire with

District 189 and commit to three years of teaching with us.  Residents who become full time teachers will become joint members of the Local 1220 Teachers’

Union and will follow

District 189 expectations of certified staff, including the evaluation process.

All residents will receive ongoing professional development and support.

Participation in the program alone does not guarantee three years of teaching in District 189.  TRP graduates are expected to utilize training received in the residency year to provide quality instruction to the students in our District.
