The collection of services runs on a significant server and storage infrastructure, and the hardware engineering team is chartered to drive the reliability, efficiency and performance of this layer.
We are looking for a Server & Storage Hardware Engineer to join our team and lead the systems hardware aspects (including EE & ME) of specifying, designing, reviewing vendor and team test plans and finally of validation of our scale out servers. This person will coordinate with other engineers in the team, with internal eBay teams and with key component and systems vendor partners. Job Requirements
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
This role owns the design and validation of server storage hardware and is a leadership position.
Drive the design choices of server & storage hardware platforms and coordinate the work of hardware engineers in the team and in key system vendors.
Develop and review server hardware processes in the team, and conduct deep technical reviews with vendors in the areas of features, logical design, power, thermal & signal integrity and four corner / reliability testing.
Provide cost / feature trade-offs for server and storage hardware.
Provide mentoring for others in the team in hardware development, and provide expert hardware consulting to other people in the company.
Lead by example by driving some of the most important and impactful server / storage hardware projects from conception to shipment.
Drive the bring up plan of new hardware systems and establish processes for this.
Work with supply chain to evaluate systems vendors and to provide scoring and technical feedback
DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
At least 10 years of system hardware engineering of which 3-5 years need to be in developing server or storage systems
Proven track record of shipping server/storage products particularly of mainstream server systems
Deep familiarity with the x86 hardware development ecosystem including BIOS, BMC and PCIe, memory subsystems and boot devices.
Expertise in bench level testing of various aspects of system hardware including debug and electrical analysis.
Working familiarity with some of the following area: storage subsystem hardware, networking systems, power supplies & distribution, mechanical / thermal testing.
Working familiarity of Linux OS, hardware test utilities and simple shell scripting.
Demonstrated technical and people leadership abilities with good communication skills
Bonus: Performance testing of compute servers, storage subsystems or networking
Bonus: Exposure to statistical reliability testing of hardware systems and components
Bonus: Hardware development experience in JDM / ODM models
BS EE or CS with continued formal or informal education
Position ideally based in San Jose, CA with some travel required.
