The Requirements

To be a strong fit for this opportunity, you will have:
  • Proven experience within the electrical utilities industry; including strong Transmission and Distribution (T&D) knowledge. Sales experience is highly preferred. Quick question for you - click here
  • Strong electrical knowledge and an understanding of industry terminology (phase, voltage, grounding, etc.)
  • A bachelor’s degree from and accredited college or university and/or the equivalent level of education and experience.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, CRM experience preferred.
  • Clean driving record.
  • Excellent networking skills.
  • The ability to navigate large, complex end-user electrical utility organizations.
  • The ability to take ownership of his/her market and responsibilities.
  • Strong team participation skills.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and dedicated work ethic. 
You’ll take ownership of the Northwest Region of the U.S. The territory is still being defined, but you will likely be responsible for California, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Colorado and Arizona. 

The ideal candidate will be located within the territory near a major airport. Our preference is for a candidate to be seated in Portland, Seattle or Denver, but we will consider candidates based out of other cities in this region as well. 

There will be frequent travel required throughout the territory, approximately 60% of the time. When you are not out in your territory meeting with electrical utility companies, you will be based out of your home office. 
 

The Role

Reporting to the National Sales Manager, Utilities, you will be Makita’s regional tooling expert responsible for growing market share of Makita products in the Northwestern United States, converting investor owned electrical utilities to Makita cordless power tools and outdoor power equipment. Quick question for you - click here

You will work to identify key decision makers within complex electrical utility companies as well as partner directly with the end users who are using the tools out in the fields on the power lines. Your end goal will be to get Makita tools on the trucks that are servicing power lines throughout the Northwest region. 

You’ll join a team of three other Regional Utility Tool Sales Specialists that each focus on a unique region. We promote a collaborative environment, and you may be called in to help out with sales in other regions as needed. 

More specifically, your key responsibilities will be to:
  • Continually expand his/her knowledge of electrical T&D methods and practices
  • Rapidly identify key decision making bodies and influencing agents within large, complex companies
  • Understand tool purchasing habits, budgets and buying cycles of individual investor owned utilities
  • Identify and open new utility distributors in the Northwest
  • Cultivate and grow existing relationships and sales with existing Makita distributors
  • Understand tooling practices and trends in tooling technologies affecting those practices
  • Establish path to converting end-users working with OEM tool partners using Makita LXT batteries
  • Attend regional and national utility trade shows
  • Identify and schedule decision makers for Makita University training classes
  • Train end–users and distributor employees in the proper and safe operation of Makita power tools

Your electrical utility knowledge and experience will be essential to your success in this role, and you’ll also need proven interpersonal skills. You’ll need to be a professional who can partner with a variety of stakeholders and decision makers. For example, one day you may be meeting with the VP of Procurement for a major utility company at an upscale office, and the next, you could be out in the field, climbing a ladder to show an end user how our tools can make their job easier. Your ability to navigate between different environments and types of personalities will be critical. 

Our sales cycles vary greatly—ranging from a few weeks / months to a year or more—and we will look to you to help accelerate our sales process to increase revenue and growth.
