Job Description

MSSS is looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our Flight Systems Development Group.

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer in our Flight Systems Development group, you will be responsible for the mechanical and thermal design of critical space-flight camera hardware, from design, analysis, fabrication, and assembly, through test, calibration and delivery to the respective spacecraft. In addition, you will be called upon to assist in the development of proposals for future missions or to provide support to other engineering efforts.

You will own the entire mechanical and thermal designs for your assigned projects and will be expected to provide expert-level support to these projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Build CAD models in SolidWorks. Draft part and assembly drawings per MSSS conventions.
  • Write mechanical test plans, supervise testing, and write test reports in accordance with NASA standards.
  • Analyze component and assembly tolerances using worst-case analysis to ensure fit and satisfaction of internal and customer flow-down optical alignment requirements.
  • Primarily responsible for static designs; possible development of simple mechatronic systems.
  • Develop and approve interface control documents.
  • Build thermal models with sufficient resolution of applied power and temperature rise to support electronics part stress analysis.
  • Design thermal systems that meet requirements (in coordination with electronics designers) in space vacuum and planetary surface environments.
  • Build mechanical finite element models and use to analyze against shock and vibration requirements.
  • Oversee the procurement, fabrication, assembly, and inspection of the parts and assemblies you design.
  • Analyze radiation dose at internal electronics locations and modify designs as needed to mass-efficiently meet dose requirements.
  • Design and fabricate test and assembly fixtures
  • Clearly report design, analysis, and test results using Excel spreadsheets and Word documents.
  • Defend design and analysis at customer-facing reviews.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. Mechanical Engineering with 7 years relevant experience
  • Self-motivated and eager to acquire new skills
  • Advanced SolidWorks skills are required; SolidWorks PDM Standard, Professional, or Enterprise experience desirable.
  • Mechatronics and space mechanisms experience highly desirable.

For this position, U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident status is required for government contract work.
