The Requirements
To be a good fit for the Diesel Fleet Mechanic role, you should have:- 3 to 5+ years of experience performing scheduled preventative maintenance and necessary repairs to commercial trucks (medium to heavy commercial / DOT-regulated vehicles), vans, and automobiles Quick question for you - click here
- Knowledge of and experience with:
- Mechanical gas and diesel repair
- Hydraulic and air brake systems
- Internal combustible engines
- Your own set of hand tools, 1/2" and smaller (diagnostic, ergonomic, and high-tech equipment will be provided)
- Computer proficiency and experience with or the ability to quickly learn diagnostic and fleet maintenance software
- A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Permit or Class A CDL, AND the ability to obtain a Class A CDL within one year after hire. Note: at a minimum, you must have a CDL Permit before hire
- The ability to pass the requirements of a DOT physical examination, including drug screen, and background check

- The ability to input and maintain vehicle maintenance records
- Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (with or without an accommodation) and reach, lift, carry, push and pull
- The ability to work independently
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English
- Computer instrumentation (e.g., using desktop computers, hand-held computers (tablets / iPads), laptop computers, performing diagnostics with computers, conducting preventative maintenance, executing work orders, etc.); AssetWorks software experience is a plus
- Solid interpersonal skills with a commitment to providing outstanding customer service
- The ability to communicate tactfully and diplomatically with delivery drivers who may not have your level of mechanical expertise and knowledge
- A positive attendance record and satisfactory work history
- Experience with:
- Gas engine repair
- Repairing forklifts (e.g., repairing propane fuel systems, hydraulic systems, pallet jacks, etc.)
- Formal schooling in a technical industry (such as certification programs, military training, technical/community college, etc.)
The Role
Reporting to the Lead Fleet Mechanic, you will join a team of ten mechanics, including your supervisor. While you may train on the day shift, you will move to other your 2nd or 3rd shift schedule in short order. Everyone on the team is cross-trained to work on every asset, and everyone performs preventative maintenance, so even though you will bring outstanding experience with you, you will have new things to learn in addition to learning our processes, procedures and overall operations, including specific equipment and diagnostic software. You may go out on the road for repairs or be dispatched to one of our other locations within driving distance, such as Sherman, TX, but you'll spend the majority of your time in the Mesquite shop. We are nearly a paperless shop, with all mechanics using iPads and iPhones.The largest number of vehicles are Class 5 city delivery tractors, and the fleet also includes 53' tractor/trailers, vans, automobiles, forklifts, pallet jacks and more. Engines include International MaxxForce, Cummins and some Volvos (most are International). Most have Allison automatic transmissions, and some have Maxon lift gates.
You will work with a high degree of independence and your activities will include:
- Diagnosing failures of vehicles and disassembling, repairing and reassembling parts as necessary
- Using computer-based diagnostics to connect with modern truck interfaces
- Making basic use of computers for email and web browsers
- Adhering to DOT regulations
- Performing preventative maintenance on vehicles
- Answering road calls
- Maintaining vehicle records as required
- Maintaining and repairing fleet equipment
- Filling out all necessary documents
- Maintaining records such as daily check lists (pre-trip inspections)

We're looking for an experienced fleet technician who can hit the ground running, but who will also come in willing to learn and embrace our systems. A positive, upbeat attitude will also be important. Expectations will be clear and you have a 30/60/90 probation period in which to learn and demonstrate your skill and talent.Naturally, your technical expertise will be essential but you also will need solid people skills as you work with the drivers, helping them understand the vehicles and educating them about maintenance. To excel here, you'll need to be able to maintain a positive attitude so that drivers become comfortable coming to you if they suspect there may be an issue you should know about. Our ideal candidate will display the professionalism to fit in well with our experienced team but also will be enthusiastic about learning from their experience. As we're sure you'll have experience to share, there is also a wealth of knowledge on our team.
