The Requirements

To be a good fit for the Fleet Mechanic role, you should have:
  • 3 to 5 years of experience performing scheduled preventative maintenance and necessary repairs to commercial trucks (light and heavy)  Quick question for you - click here

    • Hydraulic and air brake systems
    • Internal combustible engines

  • Computer proficiency and experience with or the ability to quickly learn diagnostic and fleet maintenance software
  • The ability to input and maintain vehicle maintenance records

  • Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
Success will also require the following core competencies and characteristics:
  • The ability to work independently and thrive as the only mechanic in the shop(s)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Computer instrumentation (e.g., using desktop computers, hand-held computers, laptop computers, performing diagnostics with computers, conducting preventative maintenance, executing work orders, etc.)
  • Solid interpersonal skills with a commitment to providing outstanding customer service
  • The ability to communicate tactfully and diplomatically with delivery drivers who may not have your level of mechanical expertise and knowledge
  • A positive attendance record and satisfactory work history
Preferred but not required:
  • Experience with:
    • Gas engine repair
    • Repairing forklifts (e.g., repairing propane fuel systems, hydraulic systems, pallet jacks, etc.)
  • Formal schooling in a technical industry (such as certification programs, military training, technical/community college, etc.)
  • Completion of ASE or manufacturers certifications
    • Note: earning ASE certifications will be key to advancing your career here; we reimburse expenses for passed tests
We rotate shifts every three months, with the majority of our mechanics working the 2nd shift. For training, you will start on days and then enter the rotation beginning on second shift, 3:30 PM-Midnight. You'll work Monday through Friday and, while you'll rarely work weekends, you will work on holidays. 

The Role

Reporting to the Fleet Supervisor, you will join a team of Mechanics, including a Lead. While you will train on the day shift, once you have joined the rotation, only one mechanic works the day shift at a time. Everyone on the team is cross-trained to work on every asset, and everyone performs preventative maintenance. Occasionally you may go out on the road for repairs, but you'll spend the vast majority of your time in the shop. We are paperless in the shop, and all Mechanics use iPads.

The largest number of vehicles are class 5 city delivery tractors, and the fleet also includes 53' tractor/trailers, vans, automobiles, forklifts, pallet jacks and more. Engines include International MaxxForce, Cummins and some Volvos. Most have Allison automatic transmissions, and some have Maxon lift gates.

You will work with a high degree of independence and your activities will include:
  • Diagnosing failures of vehicles and disassembling, repairing and reassembling parts as necessary
  • Using computer-based diagnostics to connect with modern truck interfaces
  • Making basic use of computers for email and web browsers
  • Adhering to DOT regulations
  • Performing preventative maintenance on vehicles
  • Answering road calls
  • Maintaining vehicle records as required
  • Maintaining and repairing fleet equipment
  • Filling out all necessary documents
  • Maintaining records such as daily checklists (pre-trip inspections)
