Powers Pyles Sutter & Verville is a law and government relations firm located in Washington, DC, with a national practice focused in four main areas: health law, regulation and policy; education law, regulation and policy; the law of tax-exempt organizations; and tribal law. The firm was founded in 1983 with the desire to establish a small Washington law firm with a national practice that would focus primarily on complex legal issues faced by hospitals, multihospital systems, physician groups, home health agencies, and the newer, evolving forms of healthcare delivery. The members also sought to establish a firm that would emphasize, as a first step, problem-solving rather than litigation-oriented strategies on behalf of the firm's clients and one that would render a personal rather than institutional form of service. While keeping its focus on healthcare, the firm expanded in 1994 to include a national education practice and has since added public policy and government relations services, representation of tax-exempt organizations, and tribal law. The firm is operated as a professional corporation and has 19 principals. The firm has attorneys who are "of counsel" to the firm, as well as associates and other non-attorney professionals and paralegals with specialized knowledge in the areas of healthcare, education, public policy, legislation and non-profit law. Approximately half of our professionals concentrate exclusively on healthcare issues. Our professionals have served in senior positions in Congress, the White House, the Department of Health and Human Services, presidential commissions and advisory boards, corporate positions, and the private practice of law. The firm remains philosophically committed to the initial vision of remaining mid-sized and independent.
