THE TEACHERS WE SEEK
Salem Public Schools (SPS) knows that there is no more important factor in a child's education than a great teacher. Here in Salem, great teachers are passionate about urban education, drive student achievement, reflect and respect the racial, cultural, and linguistic diversity of our students, and have a strong commitment to the Salem community. Salem Public Schools also seeks individuals who are able to serve all of our students, regardless of ability or language, have experience teaching in urban schools, are bilingual, and hold dual certifications.

Salem Public Schools has a strong focus on standards-based instruction and student-centered learning. Key competencies that we look for in our educators include:

We are interested in teachers who have a firm understanding of the central concepts and skills of their content areas, have a firm understanding of what “mastery” looks like for key concepts, and are skillful in building accessible lessons that match grade-level standards.
  • Support for all learners. We believe it is essential for teachers to demonstrate cultural sensitivity, awareness, and responsiveness and to be skillful in designing daily learning experiences that are accessible to all learners.
  • Strong relationships. We seek to recruit educators who are committed to developing strong relationships with students and who are invested in learning about their students academically, personally, and socially. Positive and ongoing family engagement is a core value that all members of the Salem Public Schools team prioritize.
  • Assessment and data. We want our teachers to use formative assessments to collect timely and relevant data about student's mastery of content and skill and to use data to personalize instruction.
