The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal protection organization, is seeking a Web Specialist, animalsheltering.org in our Companion Animals department. The main responsibility of the role is to provide complete technical support for the department, animalsheltering.org, Animal Care Expo’s registration site, e-newsletter campaigns, and social media platforms.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Overseeing relationships to appropriately manage content development, banner ad creation, workflow management, component enhancements, and Animal Sheltering magazine content;
  • Managing the online store and other shelter/rescue-related projects for the department to create a complete online resource center for animal care, control, and rescue professionals and volunteers;
  • Writing and/or coordinating messaging and the publication of content on animalsheltering.org, including email campaigns, social media, and other digital channels as needed;
  • Leading HTML, CSS and JavaScript programmer for emails, web pages, and other products;
  • Working to develop more interactive options to engage visitors in our content as well as tracking usage of and receptivity to these interactions, using the information to determine how best to engage our visitors, keep them on the site and get them to take action for companion animals;
  • Providing first level support for all technical issues relating to web properties and overseeing all technical, editorial aspects, and operations of animalsheltering.org;
  • Working with vendors for new site features as well as testing, designing, and coordinating as necessary for new site features;
  • Managing/drafting daily web updates, including homepage, magazine content, ads and news;
  • Maintaining animalsheltering.org and other analytics accounts, including the creation of reports, filters, goals and user management;
  • Creating regular reporting based on requests from staff as well as tracking usage and receptivity to user interactions, using the information to determine how to best engage our visitors;
  • Selecting and editing photographs and working with web designer to create special graphics;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in one of the social sciences, computer science, journalism, or other related field or equivalent work experience;
  • A minimum of two years’ experience in a web, publications, or other creative environment;
  • Knowledge of a web design program such as Dreamweaver and/or knowledge of HTML;
  • Knowledge of a website content management system required;
  • Knowledge of Photoshop and other desktop publishing software preferred;
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills with demonstrated flexibility and the ability to manage multiple and often changing priorities and issues of varying complexity, while meeting time sensitive deadlines and deliverables;
  • Ability to work both independently and as an effective team member;.
  • Top-notch writing, editing, research, and web-development skills;
  • Must be detail-oriented, organized and able to prioritize multiple tasks successfully;
  • A strong desire to work on behalf of companion animals.
