This position operates within the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Office of Transit Safety and Oversight (TSO). The position is geographically located in a single FTA Regional Office, but you will be responsible for carrying out job responsibilities for multiple regions. You will work under the general supervision of the Director, Office of Safety Review and serve as a liaison between FTA Headquarters and the Regional Office(s) performing a variety of safety related oversight and compliance activities. Drawing on broad engineering knowledge, you will advise both TSO management and FTA Regional Office staff on safety deficiencies that are discovered in the program areas. You will also coordinate with TSO staff, FTA regional staff, and contractors to provide engineering advice and guidance on information regarding safety compliance in program areas during regular and specialized technical compliance reviews, and for related safety activities.
As the Regional Safety Officer (RSO), you will perform a variety of complex program activities that include: conducting safety and security readiness reviews (SSRRs) for the state agencies and rail transit agencies (RTAs) in the State Safety Oversight (SSO) program, monitoring of the State Safety Oversight program engagement with respect to project planning and design of systems within their jurisdiction; reviewing 5329 grant applications; project implementation, inspection and coordination activities, implementation of Safety Management Systems (SMS) for rail transit agencies and serves as TSO’s on-site accident and incident investigation representative acting as the liaison between the FTA Regional office, the SSOA and the National Transportation Safety Board. You will also provide safety assessments of tasks in the areas of bus and rail operations.
The ideal candidate for this position is a seasoned General Engineer with experience performing a variety of safety related oversight and compliance activities for transit operations.
