Position Summary:

The University of Alaska Southeast seeks a dynamic, team-oriented professional to serve as our Financial Aid Director on the Juneau campus. This a fast-paced, dynamic, and evolving program that is a good fit for candidates with a strong customer service, higher education, and financial assistance programs background. The incumbent must coordinate the functions of the Financial Aid Office with the mission and strategic plan of the University of Alaska Southeast. Duties:

Monitor and reconcile accounts of all types of student financial aid and provide reports to UAS Administration, UA Administration, and the Board of Regents. Regularly report expenditures of Federal Title IV funds (Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Education Grant, Teach Grants, Federal Direct Loans, and Federal Work Study) to the US Dept. of Education via the Common Origination and Disbursement system and the Fiscal Operations and Application to Participate in Federal Aid Programs (FISAP). Communicate with outside agency representatives, Federal, State and UA auditors, and Federal Program Review staff.
 
Provide detailed and in-depth information about the availability of student aid and other funding possibilities to students and parents which may involve personal counseling sessions, presentations at high schools and community events and financial aid workshops.
 
Represent the UAS Financial Aid Office in the development of the operating budget, at Student Services Department meetings, at the UA Financial Aid Director's audioconferences and meetings, and as general advocacy for student aid in various forums on and off campus.
 
Serve as a member of the UAS Enrollment Team, UAS Retention Committee, UAS Student Services Director's group, other UAS and UA focus groups as requested and warranted, the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education Technical Advisory Group, and the Statewide Scholarship Selection Committee. In addition, participate as a member of the Alaska Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, the Western Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, the National Association of Financial Aid Administrators, and serve on outside agencies'' advisory councils when requested.
 
Administer federal, state, institutional and private student aid programs in keeping with the policies and procedures of the Federal Department of Education, the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, other governmental funding agencies (e.g. Vocational Rehabilitation, Job Training and Workforce Development), the University of Alaska's Board of Regents, the University of Alaska Southeast, and all private funding sources.
 
Manage UAS's Financial Aid Office, supervise all office staff, develop office policies and procedures in compliance with all laws, rules, and regulations and in coordination with the Financial Aid Directors on the University of Alaska Anchorage and the University of Alaska Fairbanks campuses to ensure that policies and procedures are consistent across the entire UA system, program planning and coordination with other UAS and UA departments and off-campus agencies.

This is a full-time, Grade 81, 12-month, exempt staff position complete with a full employee benefits package. This is open until filled recruitment with the initial application review taking place on April 12th, 2018.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Three years progressively responsible relevant experience and two years management experience; Or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred Experience:

  • Three to Five years progressively responsible experience in Financial Aid office.
  • Proficient skills with Banner or another relational database, or grant and loan management software.
  • Experience working successfully with people of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to demonstrate strong problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate interpersonal skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lead and direct a small staff.
  • Knowledge about both Federal and State Student Financial Aid programs, and Governmental Accounting.
  • Knowledge of Financial Aid rules, processes, policies, and procedures in higher education.
  • Knowledge of FERPA regulations and confidentiality procedures.
