DESCRIPTION

ORPAT testing dates to be determined.
 
We offer a $5000.00 signing bonus for successful lateral applicants with two or more years of experience in the corrections field.  Bonus paid out at half with first paycheck, half upon successful completion of eighteen month probationary period. Lateral starting pay commensurate with experience.
 
Positions are located in the Corrections Division of the Sheriff's Office.
 
The minimum standards for employment as a Deputy Sheriff are established in the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training Act. O.R.S. 181.610-181.690.

Schedule: Must be able to work a variety of shifts, including but not limited to days, swing and graveyard; work any day of the week, including but not limited to weekends and holidays. Some overtime may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Performs specialized corrections work in any of the following areas: maintains custody and surveillance of inmates confined in the correctional facility; observes and reports inmate behavior and physical condition; recommends inmate discipline and other action; escorts inmates and/or the public within the corrections facility; supervises and instructs inmates on various work crews; inspects inmates' quarters for cleanliness, safety and contraband; monitors all inmate activities; provides routine information concerning inmate status, departmental rules and facility policies and procedures.

CLASSIFICATION DETAILS

Knowledge of:
Pertinent federal, state and local laws and ordinances pertaining to law enforcement and corrections operations, including laws of arrest, search-and-seizure, evidence, civil process, traffic and department policies and procedures, rules and regulations.
 
Ability to:
Properly utilize required equipment; perform strenuous physical activities; understand and follow verbal and written instructions; establish and maintain harmonious and effective working relationships; maintain order and supervise the conduct of inmates; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to include the composition of handwritten reports; exercise mature judgment and react quickly and effectively in emergency and high-stress situations; conduct investigations, collect, evaluate, and analyze facts and draw correct conclusions; meet the hiring standards established by both the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standard and Training and the Lane County Sheriff's Office. Ability to obtain/maintain firearms qualifications.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Education:
Equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade. Two years of college is preferred.
 
Experience:
Must have two years experience dealing with the public.
 
Substitution
An equivalent combination of experience and training, demonstrating the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying.

Employment for Deputy Sheriff is contingent upon successful completion of:
• Physical Abilities Test: The Oregon Physical Abilities Test (ORPAT) will be administered. Visit www.oregon.gov/DPSST/AT/ORPAT.shtml to review the physical abilities description, preparing for ORPAT, and to view a video of the test. You must pass the physical abilities test in order to be eligible to take the written examination.
Written Examination: Assesses memory and understanding of oral/written information; reading comprehension; numerical calculations and written communication skills. You must pass the written examination in order to continue to the interview process.
• Pre-Employment Background Check.
• Interview: All eligible candidates will be contacted by phone to schedule a date and time for an interview. You must pass the interview in order to continue in the hiring process.
• Background Investigation: A thorough background investigation will be conducted including a psychological examination, an evaluation with a psychologist, and a medical examination with a drug screen and TB test. You must pass the background investigation in order to continue in the hiring process.

Lane County Sheriff's Office examples of minimum standards and disqualifying factors:
The following are minimum standards and examples that may cause your rejection for consideration as an applicant with the Lane County Sheriff's Office. This list is not all inclusive but only covers some typical examples:
• Must be 21 years of age by the date of appointment.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen within one year of appointment. (DPSST).
• Must be a high school graduate or have successfully passed G.E.D. equivalency test.
• Must have valid Oregon Driver's License at time of appointment.
• Application and background information must be furnished completely, accurately, legibly, truthfully without deception, gross error or pertinent omissions.
• Applicants convicted of felony crimes will not be considered to advance further in the process.
• Conviction of DUII within last three years.
• Conviction of some misdemeanor crimes may be cause for rejection.
• Conviction of domestic violence.
• Multiple arrests without conviction.
• Multiple traffic accidents.
• Multiple traffic violations (for example: three moving violations in the last twelve months may cause rejection).
• Conviction of major traffic crimes within last three years.
• Multiple bankruptcies or repeated failure to pay just debts.
• History of habitual use of alcohol without proven rehabilitation, including driving under the influence.
• History of drug sales or of drug use, including marijuana, methamphetamine, LSD, etc., without proof of satisfactory rehabilitation.
• History of mental, psychological or personality disorders, to include threats of self-destruction or suicide.
• History indicating a propensity for violence, assault or inability to control one's temper and anger even under provoking circumstances.
• History of physical or sexual abuse to family members.
• History of multiple involvements in neighborhood disputes.
• History of association with known criminals other than family members.
• Any statement written or spoken that is verified to be untruthful.
• Termination for cause or termination during probationary period from previous law enforcement or criminal justice employment.
• History of any conduct that could reasonably be concluded would adversely affect the veracity, credibility, and/or ability to reach sound decisions and use good judgment in performance of duties.
• History of injury or disability that may hinder ability to perform duties of a Deputy Sheriff when reasonable accommodation cannot be made.
• A personal history that would bring disrepute, embarrassment, or lack of public support to the Lane County Sheriff's Office, if appointed.
• Violation of department policies and/or procedures, rules and regulations after appointment to position.
• Record over the past three years of excessive absenteeism or tardiness during your employment.
• A history of job instability reflected by multiple changes in jobs and/or occupation over the past three years.
• Failure to successfully complete or pass any portion of the selection process for this position, to include a no-hire recommendation by the department's psychologist or psychiatrist.
• Dishonorable discharge from military service for any of the reasons stated here.

Any applicant who is disqualified during our background process will not be considered for any position within the Lane County Sheriff's Office for a period of two years from the disqualification date.
