Job Description

Last Update: 5/15/20
Located in Northern California's Central Valley, nestled between Sacramento and the SF Bay Area, St. Joseph’s Medical Center is a member of Dignity Health, the fifth largest healthcare system in the country and the largest hospital provider in California. Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Medical Center is seeking a Founding Program Director to develop a Urology Residency Program planned to start in 2020-2021. The intent will be to have five or six residents per year for a total of 10 residents as part of a urology program in Stockton, CA. This follows on the heels of three successful residency programs that have already started in Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, and two additional programs with pending accreditation in OB/GYN and Transitional Year.

This is a rare opportunity to build a program that will fill a vital need and have significant impact on the quality of care delivery and health outcomes of this population. Through the establishment of this residency program at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, the estimated growth of urology cases is expected to increase substantially due to the catchment area and not losing cases to large metropolitan communities. Additionally, the Program Director will have an appointment with Touro University California and/or potentially UCSF.

Serving the community since 1899, St. Joseph's Medical Center is a regional destination for specialized care. As a not-for-profit, regional hospital with 355 beds, a physician staff of over 400, and more than 2,400 employees, St. Joseph’s is fully accredited by The Joint Commission and is consistently chosen as the “most preferred hospital” by local consumers.

The successful candidate will be a confident, visionary leader with the maturity, integrity, knowledge, and cultural sensitivity to inspire, develop, and recruit strong faculty and residents and advance collaborative relationships with community partners.

Key Responsibilities:
  • The Program Director must administer and maintain an educational environment conducive to educating the residents in each of the ACGME competency areas.
  • Approve the continued participation of program faculty based on evaluation.
  • Monitor resident supervision at all participating sites.
  • Prepare and submit all information required and requested by the ACGME. This includes but is not limited to the program application forms and annual program resident updates to the ADS; and ensure that the information submitted is accurate and complete.
  • Comply with the sponsoring institution’s written policies and procedures, including those specified in the Institutional Requirements, for selection, evaluation and promotion of residents, disciplinary action, and supervision of residents.
  • Maintain clinical skills with protected time for direct patient care and CME.
  • Monitor and evaluate the program to maintain compliance and ensure that all educational and performance standards set forth by the Program Director are being met by staff, facilities, and residents.
  • Coordinate all schedules, including lectures and educational sessions, and allocate appropriate time for participation and involvement in all scholarly activities.
  • Assure that the requirements established by the ACGME and the Urology Review Committee are met by the program. Provides verification of resident eligibility to enter American Board of Urology Maintenance of Certification process.
  • Works with the Designated Institutional Official to meet program and institutional ACGME requirements.
Education/Certifications/Licensure
  • MD or DO degree.
  • Current Board Certification in Urology.
  • Unrestricted State of California Medical License (current or eligible) and DEA number.
Professional Qualifications/Experience
  • Five (5) years' experience as a practicing Urology Physician.
  • Two (2) years' experience as core faculty member in an ACGME-accredited Urology Residency Program.
  • Demonstrated leadership in teaching; experience in community-engaged health care research.
  • Demonstrated instructional and presentation skills.
  • Current ACLS and BLS.

Salary and academic rank for this position will be commensurate with the applicant's experience and academic background. Dignity Health offers an excellent benefits package including generous paid time off, retirement benefits, etc. A comprehensive benefits package is included.
