Responsibilities

The Material Science and Engineering Department is seeking early career candidates to enhance its materials characterization effort. This position will support multiple INL material development and application related programs. The candidate must have a strong foundational education in material science, metallurgical engineering or mechanical engineering principles related to the testing and characterization of novel materials and alloys including mechanical properties, grain structure, crystal structure, etc. You must be able to perform basic calculations to analyze and evaluate material properties. This may include application of engineering principles to design, monitor, and evaluate conditions and operational performance of alloys or novel materials; recommend maintenance and repair standards and procedures, identify vendor data, replacement and spare parts for characterization equipment; coordinate resources and priorities necessary to attain or maintain the appropriate system conditions utilized for material characterization. You must possess good written and oral communication skills. You will work in a team environment and must be comfortable being part of a team and fulfilling all obligations and responsibilities of functioning within a team setting. The ideal applicant must demonstrate (1) proactive and innovative ways of working in a dynamic R&D environment, (2) willingness to seek opportunities to learn new skills and proficiencies, in addition to maintaining those already acquired at the cutting edge of technology, (3) a self-motivated work ethic, and (4) mastery of principles related to materials characterization and performance 5) contribute not only to the execution of work, but also in defining and planning the direction of work to bring about successful outcomes 6) Comply with and help maintain and improve all relevant health and safety requirements, emergency action policies and procedures, methods for reporting/resolving work practices or conditions to available cognizant professionals and perform all work in an environmentally safe and compliant manner.

The position will require you to:
• Plan and execute multiple laboratory operations relating to material performance and characterization including: i) planning, designing and execution of experiments, including, but not limited to mechanical and environmental testing, ii) pre- and post-test specimen preparation including but not limited to design, insertion into testing apparatuses, iii) heat treatment, iv) post-test failure analysis including but not limited to the use of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, microstructure characterization, specimen sectioning mounting and polishing, hardness testing, welding, x-ray diffraction
• Independently obtain and collect data from research experiments
• Perform technical evaluation of data related to material characterization
• Contribute to the development of program plans
• Extract and compile technical data and documentation as required and contribute to technical reports, publications, and presentations at national technical meetings as well as project reviews with team members and program sponsors as needed
• Support management and work program leadership in meeting DOE/industry expectations, milestones and deliverables, and INL internal reporting metrics
• Interface and develop relations with other labs and industry related to current work scope
• Contribute to identifying concepts for new business and assist in their development
• Sometimes work outside normal office hours to initiate maintain or complete tests/experiments or other work-related assignment.

Qualifications:

Minimum of a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering or equivalent disciplines and at least 1 year of relevant experience.

Special Requirements and/or Training:
The preferred candidate must work well in a team environment and is expected to be a team contributor.
The position involves occasional travel and some work outside normal office hours.

The preferred candidate will have:
• Demonstrated experience with the operation and maintenance of equipment and typical hand tools
• Demonstrated abilities to follow written procedures, guidelines, and rules as well as documenting work that has been performed
