The Infrastructure Security Department at INL is hiring multiple Senior Power Engineers to support cutting-edge projects happening in the National and Homeland Security Directorate. In this role you will lead and direct research in state-of-the-art power testing and analysis of generation, transmission and distribution systems within the critical infrastructure protections and resilience mission. The ideal candidate will have in-depth technical knowledge in one or more of the following areas: commercial power transmission designs, including protection devices, transformers, generators, control systems, and communications; radio frequency (RF) measurements on electronic systems, including measurement of free field RF environments; electromagnetic pulse (EMP)/geomagnetic disturbance (GMD) test hardening and vulnerability assessments including understanding Smart Grid Technologies, Renewable Integration, effects, phenomenology, protection mechanisms, and coupling predictions.

Responsibilities:
Provide technical direction to analytic efforts, research endeavors, technology solutions and business development support for the power research community, including US public utilities, Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Energy (DOE), the Intelligence Community and other government agencies.

Help develop and implement research plans and business strategies that result in significant impact to the N&HS mission space

Assist the successful implementation (cost, schedule, safety, security, environmental compliance, and quality assurance) of associated projects and programs

Develop and maintain active relationships with key clients and strategic partnerships with key external stakeholders

Provide technical consultation in areas of expertise, and work as an effective team player with other researchers, line managers, relationship managers, and professional technical/administrative staff across INL.

Qualifications:

Must be a US Citizen and be able to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy (DOE) Security Clearance

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and 8 years of relevant experience or Master's and 6 years or PhD and 4 years

Preferred candidates will have experience in one or more of the following areas:

In-depth knowledge of control system protocols, including DNP 3.0, Modbus, ICCP and IEC 61850.

Working level understanding of cyber risks associated with each industrial control system (ICS) components, protocols and the networks on which they operate.

Experience with high and medium voltage design, including substation electrical design, switchgear design, transmission line design, etc.

Experience with the design, operations, configurations of generation systems, especially gas turbine systems.

Experience with designing and integrating renewable energy systems.

Experience with site testing/commissioning

Experience with NERC CIP and other regulatory compliance issues.

Experience with modeling electric power systems, ideally using multiple tools including PowerWorld, RTDS, PSS/E, Aspen Oneliner, ETAP, SKM, EMTP-RV, Aspen One-Liner, and SKM Power Tools.

Experience with low voltage (
