Overview

Under general direction, the Laboratory Animal Sciences Technician will perform a variety of tasks following established techniques and procedures. Assist in study execution; collects samples from and administers agents to research animals as IACUC approved studies require. Works with a variety of animal species and tasks will involve both in-vivo and in-vitro procedures.

Documents laboratory work to acceptable standards and maintains laboratory/medical equipment and supplies in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), protocols and regulations. The successful candidate will assist in administrative functions of study execution such as labeling collection tubes and transporting supplies to appropriate area.

Qualifications

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and 1-2 years of relevant post high school education (college, university or technical school) in a science curriculum or one (1) to five (5) years of equivalent work experience in a research, commercial or hospital laboratory; or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained 

Requires strong written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work independently and as a part of a team. Preferred computer proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Internet Explorer, Outlook and the ability to learn department-specific computer systems as needed.

Requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and other heavy equipment, pushing, bending, stooping, climbing, prolonged standing, outdoor work, working in extremes temperature and humidity. Must be able to wear a respirator and protective clothing or equipment. A Post-offer physical and background check/security clearance are required. Ability to gain and maintain access to Kirtland Air Force base (KAFB) is required.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

ALAT and LAT certification is preferred. Incumbent is encouraged to sit for ALAT and/or LAT within 12 months as a level 2 technician. LAT and/or LATG within the first 24 months is encouraged.

Physical Requirements

Work is performed in a wet laboratory environment.  Will operate standard laboratory equipment and will frequently stand, walk, sit, perform lab- and desk-based computer tasks, perform laboratory techniques requiring grasping/pipetting/hand dexterity, perform repetitive motions and occasionally lift objects that weigh up to 50 pounds.  Will wear personal protective equipment which may include a respirator.  May work in close proximity to an environment containing research animals and may be required to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious agents are present which may require vaccinations.The above is intended to describe the general requirements for the position and should not be interpreted as an exhaustive statement of physical requirements.  The Institute will provide reasonable accommodation to any employee with a disability who requires an accommodation to perform the essential functions of the position.

Salary

Salary is commensurate with experience + $500 sign-on bonus.

We perform animal identification tests and drug checks in the practicals. We manage inventory control supplies and equipment of the laboratories. In the role of Laboratory Animal Technician, we are accountable for understanding the procedures and instructions of the senior laboratory technicians while performing our practicals. We ensure the safety and security during the performance of practicals of both ourselves and the animals.
