Research Associate, Protein Sciences

We are seeking highly motivated research associates to join our group in South San Francisco, CA. This is an exciting opportunity for experienced and passionate associates or recent graduates to apply and expand their skills in protein sciences and contribute to the discovery of innovative therapies.
The successful applicants will carry out experiments in protein expression, purification, and characterization to support biochemical assays and structure determination. Working closely with an experienced team of interdisciplinary scientists, the candidates will have regular opportunities to present findings to the Protein Sciences team. The ideal associates should have a strong desire to learn new techniques and incorporate new methodologies into their work, as well as be detail-oriented, self-motivated, well organized, and enjoy working and learning in a dynamic team environment.
Requirements
What will you be doing?
- Carrying out experiments ranging from protein expression to protein characterization including cell culture in a variety of scales and hosts, various forms of protein purification (affinity, SEC, IEX), as well as protein analytical assays (SDS PAGE, HPLC, mass spectrometry, and buffer formulations).
- Support developing and implementing innovative protein expression, purification, and characterization protocols for novel drug targets.
- Optimize protein expression, purification, and analytics protocols.
- Work independently and in a team environment, with supervision from scientists for timely delivery of targets for project teams.
- Provide written updates to the Protein Sciences team, and present in group meetings.
- Maintain clear, detailed documentation of all experiments and findings.
- Comply with best laboratory safety practices
- Assist with inventory of required materials and maintain lab equipment to support the Protein Sciences team
What are we looking for?
- BS or MS in Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, or a related field with 0-2 years of academic or industry experience
- Solid basic scientific knowledge and understanding of protein structure/function
- Ability to keep good records of bench work in electronic notebook and in-house database
- Ability to gather data, perform analysis, and present results to team members
- Strong problem-solving skills and desire to learn new skills
Preferred
- Hands-on experience in protein characterization techniques such as SDS-PAGE, Western Blot, DLS, DSF, analytical SEC, reversed-phase chromatography, and mass spectrometry
- Hands-on experience with liquid chromatography using Agilent HPLC and AKTA FPLC systems
- Experience in protein expression in E. coli, insect, and/or mammalian cells
- Hands-on experience in purification of proteins using affinity, size exclusion, ion exchange, and other forms of chromatography
- Experience with Molecular biology software, public protein database, and BLAST searches
- Prior experience with microbial cell culture and sterile technique
- Small-scale protein purification technologies
