GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Network Engineer is responsible for troubleshooting and maintaining the Credit Union's Local Area Network (LAN), Wide Area Network (WAN), and the surrounding technologies; monitoring and maintaining overall network efficiency; and managing problem resolution.

NATURE AND SCOPE OF POSITION:

The Network Engineer works with some supervision and direction and is authorized to take reasonable actions necessary to carry out the assigned responsibilities of the position, provided that such action is consistent with cost-effective practices and is consistent with the policy and procedures of Kinecta Federal Credit Union in general.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

There are no direct supervisory responsibilities but will be expected to take the lead on assigned projects and may coordinate the work of others working on assigned project.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provides technical direction and engineering expertise for network (LAN/WAN) infrastructure.
  • Deploys, monitors, and supports network hardware/software within the corporate/branch/ATM infrastructure.
  • Determines tools for performance measurement.
  • Generates and reviews appropriate reports and performance statistics for capacity planning or trending analysis.
  • Assisting determining impact of applications on network efficiency.
  • Applies knowledge of emerging technology trends and develops alternatives with respect to hardware, software, and network architectures.
  • Recommends appropriate modifications to maximize system throughput.
  • Prepares written reports of alternatives, their impact, and a recommendation of which alternative to adopt.
  • Gathers system/network requirements from business units for developing future hardware/software/network capacity requirements and alternatives.
  • Follows established administrative, tracking, and best practice procedures.
  • Identifies and resolves routine technical problems in a timely manner while determining and fixing the root cause of routine problems.
  • Interfaces routinely with other IT team members as well as internal customers (other departments) and vendors to determine network infrastructure needs.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs other duties including special projects as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge in network design, management, and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, routing protocols, remote access and wireless systems.
  • Knowledge in LAN, WAN, and supporting networking technologies.
  • Basic knowledge of Voice over IP technologies.
  • Working knowledge of data/voice cabling structures.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows 2000/2003 Server operating systems, Active Directory, DNS, WINS, and domain architecture.
  • Working knowledge of e-mail, content filtering, and intrusion detection technologies.
  • Solid organization, prioritization, and time management skills.
  • Solid written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems utilizing sniffer, packet capture, or other resources.
  • Ability to interact with staff, members and others encountered in the course of work.
  • Ability to learn and apply new information or skills.
  • Ability to perform highly detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks.
  • Ability to work under intense deadlines and under pressure.
  • Ability to respond after-hours when contacted and to perform troubleshooting.

Education, Training and Experience:

Potential candidates for this position must meet the following requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • One years' experience in network design, management, and troubleshooting.
  • Cisco Certified (i.e. CCNA, CCNP) or equivalent experience highly preferred.
  • Preferred expertise in Cisco Systems IOS, its structure and capabilities; Nortel; Windows operating systems; integrating applications with LAN and WAN technologies.
  • Experience utilizing MS Office, MS Visio, and MS Project to document and facilitate task completion.
  • Experience with connectivity issues and ability to troubleshoot in a detail-oriented manner.
  • Experience planning and troubleshooting Cisco equipment.

One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.



WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • The working environment is generally favorable. Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc.
  • The job may require flexibility with regards to scheduling days, hours, and work location, depending on business needs.
  • The job is typically sedentary but may require standing and walking up to 35% of the work time to transfer files, ask questions, and related activities.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES, MENTAL DEMANDS, AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Must be able to exercise sound judgment, effectively plan and be well organized, have excellent oral and written communications skills, work well under changing timelines, take the initiative and be flexible and cooperative. Accuracy, timeliness and maintaining confidentiality related to member, employee information and company records is required.

While performing the job duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit; talk or hear in person and by telephone; use hands to operate standard office equipment; reach with hands and arms; lift minimum 10 lbs.

The employee is frequently required to walk and stand. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus to read and operate office equipment, as necessary. The employee works under typical office conditions and noise levels.
