Job Description

 Position Overview:  Apogee Research is looking for people to join our team in pursuit of solving some of the hardest problems in computer systems and network security. Our team is customer-focused and passionate about delivering solutions to fill critical unmet needs efficiently. We currently have openings for a System Administrator (full-time) located in our Arlington, VA office. Our ideal candidate will provide system administration support and system maintenance. Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • UNIX/Linux system administration: OS installs, upgrades and security patching
  • Windows Server and laptop administration: maintain Windows Server 2019 and apply security patches, install and configure Windows 10 laptops for end users.
  • User account management, rights and permissions on Windows and Linux
  • Knowledge and experience in supporting Centos/Red Hat networking services and protocols such as TCP/IP, DNS, FTP, SSH, SMTP, SSL, HTTP etc.
  • Experience with scripting and automating routine tasks.
  • Provide remote or personal ‘help desk’ support to users.  Common applications include:
    • VirtualBox
    • Vagrant
    • Cygwin
    • Office 365 tools
    • Mailvelope
    • Docker
    • Adobe
  • backups and recovery as secondary support
  • Security hardening (Applying STIGs)
  • Performance tuning
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot hardware/software/network issues
  • Routine audits of systems and software.
  • Install patches and configuration changes during after-hours and routine maintenance windows.
  • Monitor system performance and health perform system tuning and optimizations.
  • Ability to work with staff face-to-face, via phone, and chat
  • Ad-hoc project work
  • Ability to prioritize workload and respond quickly to critical issues

Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science - Information Systems is preferred
  • 4+ years’ experience in systems administration of an Enterprise IT environment and configuration management
  • Experience in systems administration and enterprise change control process
  • Experience in information systems documentation process
  • Security and Compliance. Experience in implementing controls in accordance with NIST 800-171: Protecting Controlled Unclassified information

Skills:

  • Strong written and oral communication skills are required
  • Strong scripting background with Java, Python, or PowerShell a plus
  • Experience with configuring and maintaining Confluence, Jira, and gitlab
  • Experience with configuring and maintaining Openstack
  • Knowledge of Docker and a related swarm based technology
  • Application of group policy on a Windows Domain Controller
  • Use of Devops tools to automate provisioning of systems and testing of code in a repeatable environment.
