Position Overview

PMI Worldwide is looking for a Packaging Engineer.  In this role, you will be the go-to resource for all structural packaging solutions for PMI’s products including primary packaging, point of sale displays, and club pallet programs. You will interface with product management, graphic design, quality assurance, and production engineering in delivering packaging solutions that allow PMI’s products to be protected in transit while also standing out at retail.  If you like to think big, take ownership, win as a team, and leave the world better than you found it, we want to hear from you!

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for material selection, die-line creation in CAD, prototyping, and specification for primary and secondary packaging.
  • Develop innovative structural designs that are appealing to the consumer, structurally sound, easy to set-up and cost effective.
  • Responsible for designs that are on-strategy based on packaging brief documentation and key stakeholder feedback.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers and creative teams to determine proper point-of-sale function for packaging and displays.
  • Supports Operations and QA throughout the package sampling, transit testing, qualification, and manufacturing processes.
    • Collaborate with QA to determine quality requirements and defines protocols as needed.
    • Collaborate with Logistics to build container load-plans within customer requirements.
    • Identify and execute improvements or enhancements to structural design products and services portfolio to stay current with customers and market expectations.
    • Communicate with vendors regarding capabilities (domestic & overseas) and manage packaging sampling approval process.
    • Utilizes PMI’s prototyping equipment and vendors to create prototypes for development and sales purposes.
    • Maintains prototype equipment, including troubleshooting and the ordering of supplies.
    • This position reports to the Director of R&D.

 

Skills and Expertise

  • Understanding of properties, terminology and specifications surrounding corrugate, paperboard, and other packaging materials.
  • Familiarity with packaging printing, manufacturing, and assembly processes.
  • Understanding of point-of-sale packaging requirements and solutions. 
  • Ability to take initiative and prioritize tasks; good time-management, organizational, problem-prevention and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and project a professional image when giving and taking information in writing, in person and online.
  • Experience in working with Asian-based suppliers.
  • 3+ years of work experience with a bachelor’s degree in packaging engineering or technical degree and/or strong Packaging Engineer work experience.
  • Proficiency in Artois and Adobe Creative Suite.  Experience with Solidworks 3D CAD and Keyshot rendering software, preferred
  • Familiarity with TOPS or CAPE software.
  • Experience in operating and maintaining a packaging sample cutting table and other prototype equipment.
  • Experience with ISTA Transit Tests and retail customer requirements.
