Program Director, Sustainability & Associate or Assistant Professor

Chatham University is seeking a Program Director at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank to oversee its graduate and undergraduate degree programs in sustainability. This position reports to the Dean of Chatham's nationally recognized Falk School of Sustainability & Environment.

The ideal candidate is an innovative educator and leader with both academic and applied experience in sustainability or related field. This individual has served as both an Assistant or Associate Professor at the university level and a practitioner of sustainability. This administrative faculty appointment provides a unique opportunity to accelerate the growth of the Falk School's cutting-edge academic programs. The role is central to the Falk School's mission of generating talented and passionate sustainability leaders to fill the increasing demand for sustainability expertise across corporate, government, nonprofit, and community settings. The position can be structured as either a 12-month or 10-month annual contract with compensation scaled accordingly.

Reporting to the Dean, Falk School of Sustainability & Environment, the selected candidate will:
  • Enhance the effectiveness of the Falk School's academic programs for educating the next generation of sustainability and climate leaders at the institution where Rachel Carson began her journey to spark the modern environmental movement.
  • Expand experiential learning opportunities for students via partnerships with businesses and community groups to hone real-world problem-solving skills.
  • Teach graduate and undergraduate courses within the Falk School in sustainability fields.
  • Identify and implement new methods for harnessing the full potential of Eden Hall Campus as a living, learning laboratory.
Recruitment for this position is guided by a search advocate whose role is to foster a diverse and inclusive candidate pool. Responsibilities & Duties:
  • Teach 12 credits per academic year in courses tied to sustainability.
  • Manage the Falk School's graduate and undergraduate academic degree programs in sustainability.
  • Supervise an interdisciplinary team of faculty with specializations across various aspects of sustainability.
  • Collaborate with the Dean and other faculty to develop and implement experiential learning opportunities for Falk School students.
  • Serve as an academic advisor to students.
  • Supervise students in thesis and capstone projects.
  • Engage in service to the University and to the broader community and sustainability profession.
Required Qualifications:
  • Academic Training: PhD or other doctoral degree in a relevant field of sustainability including, but not limited to, public policy, data analysis, sustainable community development, renewable energy, climate change, natural resources, law, sustainable business administration, economics, sustainable finance, social marketing, or communications.
  • Professional Practice: At least three years of experience in professional practice in sustainability or related areas, in public, non-profit, or private sector settings.
  • Faculty Experience: University-level teaching experience including in traditional classroom settings, online, and practice-based settings, in sustainability or related areas.
  • Experience working with faculty, staff and students with diverse backgrounds, identities, and perspectives.
  • Commitment to contributing to an inclusive and equitable campus community.
  • A high degree of emotional intelligence, excellent listening skills, cultivated patience for collaborative processes, and a positive, solution-oriented attitude regarding conflict and disagreement.
Renewal and promotion follow Chatham standards for administrative faculty.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate Professor rank at current institution.
  • Experience with academic program coordination or administration.
  • Professional experience related to sustainability, climate change, renewable energy, natural resources management, or related fields.
  • Experience and strengths in diverse community engagements and partnerships, including collaborative project management.
  • Knowledge of and experience with the intersection of social justice issues and environmental sustainability in either professional or academic settings.
