IT Specialist - Help Desk

The Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation ("APFC") manages the $80+ billion Alaska Permanent Fund, a sovereign endowment established in 1976 to provide for all current and future generations of Alaskans.

APFC is continually growing and developing new tools and streamlining processes that require a continually evolving technical skillset. The ability to balance this technical expertise and end user support will be critical to the success of the candidate selected. Ideal candidates will have strong customer service experience and excellent communication skills, they will also have working knowledge of Microsoft domain environments, Windows OS, Microsoft Office, and be able to demonstrate high level critical thinking / problem solving skills while quickly deepening expertise in these areas.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides primary IT support to the assigned APFC user groups
  • Performs "Help Desk" day-to-day tasks: answers questions, analyzes failures, researches solutions, revises system to overcome faults, repairs corrupted data, communicates and documents solutions to the IT team
  • Assigns, tracks, and monitors all IT user-related property
  • Adds new functionality to user workstations as requested
  • Learns and monitors the business processes to best support IT needs of end users
  • Makes recommendations to assist supported users and business processes to most effectively take advantage of IT capabilities
  • Provides feedback and recommendations to IT leadership that would better support business process
  • Trains users to most effectively use basic enterprise technologies
  • Develops comprehensive knowledge of IT technologies and systems through the latest information and formal training and will work towards becoming the Corporation's expert for those technologies designated as primary responsibilities


Plans, Recommends, Specifies, Installs, Configures, Documents and Maintains Systems and Services - Including:
  • Maintaining end user workstations and associated applications
  • Focuses on the requirements of the assigned user groups (user desktops including Intel based computers, Microsoft Windows operating systems, proprietary organizational applications and Microsoft Office)
  • Looks for ways in which the organization can increase productivity and efficiency through the use of technology
  • Assists the other IT staff as necessary and performs other duties and projects assigned

IT Security
  • Monitors and reviews IT security and recommends changes as appropriate
  • Will look for opportunities to deepen knowledge of security issues, trends, and best practices
  • Recommends changes to APFC security policy and procedures as necessary


Preferred Education
  • Associates Degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Management Information Systems or related field and up to two years related experience.
  • Combination of education and experience can meet minimum preferences.

  • The ability to: communicate effectively (written and verbal) regarding complex regulations and procedures and involving sensitive and confidential matters; to develop and adapt new techniques; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide spectrum of colleagues; to develop and recommend solutions to complex and difficult problems.


Physical Requirements of the Job
  • Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions
  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
