Our Odyssey Charter School campus located in Altadena, CA serves 475 students in K-8th Grade. Our OCS-South location in Pasadena, CA will serve 400 students in TK-7th grade and growing to a TK-8th grade in 2023/2024.

Position Overview

OCS- South is seeking a team of founding teachers to create an enriching, engaging, and memorable upper grade program for our 6th – 8th grade students. In partnership with the Principal and Middle School Coordinator, teachers will actively develop and build a cohesive upper grade program that balances students’ social-emotional and academic needs of our students. Teachers in the Upper Grades will teach in segmented block-schedule periods to mirror a departmentalized setting for the core content areas of Reading, Writing, Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics.

Functions & Responsibilities

Curriculum and Instruction

  • Plan, implement and instruct developmentally appropriate activities to promote overall academic and emotional growth of students reflective of our school’s vision, mission and charter
  • Utilize California Common Core Standards to develop classroom curriculum aligned with OCS philosophy
  • Assess and monitor student achievement and growth utilizing school assessment tools
  • Modify teaching practices as needed per classroom assessments and individual child needs
  • Develop and monitor students’ Individualized learning Plans
  • Ensure all student needs are being met and if needed meet with the Inclusion Specialist and/or Principal
  • Review, understand, and commit to OCS policies, procedures and charter
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Social and Emotional Development

  • Establish and foster safe and nurturing classroom learning environment
  • Utilize appropriate resources, tools, and strategies to ensure the social-emotional growth and wellbeing of students
  • Support and motivate student’s toward positive goals, to understand and manage emotions, handle the emotions of others, and to build positive relationships
  • Enhance the problem solving and decision-making abilities of students, improve their relationship building capacity, and maximize their potential in school

Collaborations & Communications

  • Maintain high expectations and accountability for results
  • Collaborate with colleagues to submit lesson plans, assessment data, progress reports, narratives, and other documentation as requested to supervisor in a timely manner
  • Effectively communicate with parents on an ongoing basis via a variety of methods and approaches
  • Engage in meaningful professional development activities
  • Plan and participate in OCS Community Events
  • Meet professional obligations though efficient work habits such as meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, and coordinating activities
  • Model professional behaviors and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, peers, and the broader community.

Experience & Education

  • Valid California SB 2042 Multiple Subject Teaching Credential (or equivalent) required
  • Graduate Degree or National Board Certification highly desirable
  • Teaching experience serving diverse student populations with a variety of learning styles
  • Passion and commitment to working in a diverse school environment and ensuring that students from different backgrounds have the same high quality educational opportunities
  • Ability to use discretion and good judgment when dealing with confidential and sensitive information
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal and team building skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a grade-level and school-wide team
  • Efficient multi-tasking and time management skills
  • A strong commitment to ongoing personal learning and growth
  • Strong interpersonal and team building skills
  • Excellent organization skills and consistency in meeting deadlines
  • Bilingual (Spanish) highly desirable
  • Current First Aid & CPR Certification required

Compensation

Our compensation package consists of a salary that considers your experience and credentials; Teachers participate in the CA State Teachers Retirement System (Cal STRS), and are also eligible for health benefits package including medical, vision, and dental insurance.
