Job Description

Job Title: Remote Technical Editor

Job Summary:

We are looking for a talented and motivated editor to help us produce high-quality publications for the U.S. Army War College (USAWC).

The purpose of this position is to provide editing support to the USAWC Strategic Studies Institute (SSI), USAWC Press, and the Center for Strategic Leadership (CSL). In this role, you will be responsible for reviewing and editing a wide range of manuscripts, from academic papers to policy briefs. The editor will read submitted monographs, integrated research projects, books, manuscripts, compendiums, op-eds, and articles to determine whether authors have achieved their stated goals in writing the products. You will need to be able to work independently and be able to meet deadlines.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Analyze authors' arguments and language to determine whether they are sound and whether the authors have successfully made their point.
  • Provide constructive criticism and recommend improvements to documents and publications
  • Conduct developmental, substantive, mechanical, and copy edits and proofreading on journal article submissions
  • Fact-check, edit, and proofread written products
  • Communicate with authors regarding their submissions to the press

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • 5 years of relevant editing and publishing experience, to include:
    • Composition, technical, and written communication evaluation skills
    • Copy editing related to electronic publishing
    • Evaluating and editing reports, manuscripts, journals, and technical reports
    • Proofreading copy
    • Multimedia editing and production of audio and video presentations
  • Bachelor's degree in English, English language, English literature, composition and writing studies, rhetoric, education, communications, journalism, applied communications, media studies, publishing, or equivalent degrees awarded by accredited colleges/universities
  • Knowledge and understanding of Army and Joint strategic issues and national/regional security issues as they affect U.S. Army missions
  • Experience performing developmental, substantive, and copy editing on academic material
  • Experience publishing a print journal
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Strong logic and reasoning skills
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize objectives in a fast-paced environment
  • Attention to detail
  • Expert writing, editing, and proofreading skills
  • Expert grammar, syntax, punctuation, and spelling skills
  • Ability to gauge conciseness and clarity of writing
  • Ability to analyze arguments made by authors and assess whether they have achieved their stated goals
  • Ability to provide constructive writing criticism and feedback and recommend improvements to writing
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Outlook, SharePoint, and Adobe Acrobat Pro

Desired

  • Doctoral degree in political science, history, military studies, international relations, security studies, or a related field
  • Experience editing for the Department of Defense (DoD)
  • Military service and/or previous employment as a DoD civilian or contractor
  • Experience working in an academic setting with professors, published authors, and/or publishing professionals
  • Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Familiarity with Adobe InDesign and Microsoft Teams

Work Setting and Environment:

  • Work is to be performed remotely
  • Monday - Friday, 40 hours a week, with the possibility of having to work more than 40 hours a week on occasion
  • Work schedule is flexible, but employee will be required to attend virtual meetings at USAWC's discretion
  • On-site federal contractors, in federal buildings or on federal lands must comply with CDC guidelines with respect to wearing masks, maintaining physical distance, and other public health measures
