Founded in 1991 as MJD Communications by New York attorney Daniel Bergstein and executives Meyer Haberman and Eugene Johnson, the company has acquired dozens of rural local-exchange carriers since 1993 and has operations in 17 states in the US. In 1998 FairPoint launched its own competitive service provider, FairPoint Communications Solutions, but has decided to discontinue this unit to focus on its traditional rural markets.
